The Degtyaryov Machine Gun (or simply DP) is a Soviet Russian light machine gun designed by Vasily Degtyaryov in 1927. It was a relatively easy and cheap weapon to manufacture and was put in service with the Red Army in 1928. Compared to other Soviet weapons during World War II, it was not used much as only 795, 000 units were made and many by other countries such as the opposing forces of Finland. Later on, the DP, soon replaced by the RPD, was sold to other communist countries such as China (where it was dubbed as the Type 53 variant), North Korea, Vietnam and Cambodia.

The DP in Battlefield 1942

The DP in Battlefield 1942 is issued to the Russian Assault kit. It has a 47 round drum magazine (mounted on the top of the weapon sideways), a high rate of fire, medium recoil, high damage and low accuracy. It can generally kill in 6-7 shots. It can be considered more effective than other Assault weapon in-game because of its high 47 round capacity, but it looses in terms of accuracy and recoil. Going prone or bust firing is recommended for far away targets as the accuracy can deteriorate quickly when standing up and the recoil can easily throw off a player from its target.

The Type 53 in Battlefield Vietnam

The Type-53 variant of the DP is uniquely issued to the Viet Cong Assault kit in Battlefield Vetnam. It has a 47 round magazine, high damage, moderate accuracy and moderate recoil. It can generally kill in 6-7 shots. Unlike the DP in Battlefield 1942, the Type 53 has much less recoil and better accuracy. It is most effective at close to medium ranges, but it remains effective at long ranges as long as a player takes the necessary measures to maximize accuracy and minimize recoil (eg. going prone).
